Apple River Canyon Trail Hike in Northwestern Illinois

Earlier this month, I went on a guided hike of Apple River Canyon State Park in Northwestern Illinois.  This is an interesting area because, unlike what I am used to, it is not flat as a pancake! Lee, our park district guide from Emily Oak Nature Center, geeks out on geology and advised us that this area is “driftless” which means it did not get steam rolled by glaciers. The fall colors were just starting and I got a brisk workout climbing the trails over the canyon walls and a number of decent photos.
