Alice Berry pillow 2012 01

Chicago fashion designer Alice Berry has invented a beautiful way to use sewing scraps for an art pillow.  She saves the smallest of fabric remnants and threads and sews them inside a piece of sheer fabric to make visible stuffing for a multi-colored pillow.  She makes the pillows big, too,and the result is delightful.

Savvy sewers are good at using scraps for quilts and other projects, but there are some pieces so small that sewing anything with them is not practical.  It always made me a little sad to throw anything out because I don’t like waste.  I had used some scraps for stuffing things but the idea of making the scraps visible is brilliant!  Alice also works in color palettes that she changes in cycles, so each pillow would be a time capsule of her sewing and fashion designs from season to season and year to year.
