Artist Marcos Raya paints where the surreal overlaps with the symbolic.  I became aware of his work through the Morbid Curiosity show last summer.  Raya does a fantastic job of conveying eerie, the un-easy and restless emotions.  He takes the lexicon of the visual world around us in his paintings and mixed media art works and turns them into his own vocabulary.  He has many works that show an interest in technology and I would say he also takes symbolism from a number of mythologies as a name in the self portrait below, smoking mirror, is also a name for the Aztec god Tezcatlipoca.  I read everything in his work as being highly planned and structured; everything is intentional.
