Eustache Le Sueur Painting

Meekness (Doceur, or Mansuétude) by Eustache Le Sueur, oils, 39 7/8 x 26 3/8 in. (100.7 x 67 cm), 1650

This painting by Eustache Le Sueur [1616 – 1655], one of the founder of the Academy of painting in France, is on display in one of the side walls of the main galleries of MAIC.  The background is metallic gold, it may be either gold leaf  or ground gold was used as a pigment.  It is really lovely because the bright gold of the metallic gold surrounds the silky texture of the oil paint.

The wall placard says the work is on canvas but the online data for the catalog listing states the work is on panel.  I guess I will have to pester the museum again.  That’s what I do when I  don’t understand something.  They have always been really amenable to answering questions.

3/29 UPDATE – Gerri B. the department secretary for the European collection very kindly called back today and this work is on panel; the wall placard is incorrect and will be corrected.
