Artist of the Week: Gary Reef

Sacred Lines by Gary Reef, multimedia painting

I became aware of Gary Reef’s art by watching his YouTube art media tutorials.  He teaches professionally but also puts out a lot of free video information on art processes to encourage others to be creative.  Seeing the works in progress and watching him work in the videos gave me a deeper appreciation of his work.  He likes spontaneous methods of painting: blending, spraying and dispersing pigment on a surface, but he is patient with his works.  He is not afraid to take time with each piece and work in as many layers as needed for him to feel the work is complete.

Gary Reef works in two primary modes; he refers to these as Modern Abstract and Contemporary Figurative.  He works with acrylics, spray paint stencils, plastics and various other media on various surfaces.   Being a multimedia artist is very advantageous to our time.  There are so many materials, so many textures, colors and methods available to combine that each new work has vast potential before it is even started.
