Artist of the Week: David M. Bowers

I must have gone back to look at this painting at least half a dozen times.  I walked to it and showed my friend Noelle and she instantly burst out laughing.  This painting does a few things on few different levels.  First of all, this painting parodies and trashes the concept of ideal beauty. That part was obvious and was further emphasized by the wide, gold leaf museum style frame on the work.  Secondly, it is an insidiously wicked manner of portraiture: using all of the tropes and materials of classical portraiture with none of its pretenses.  Thirdly, this work is typical of David M. Bowers’ art; he uses a very classical, traditional painting style descended from the Renaissance to display contemporary themes, people and material objects.  His handling of the oils is meticulous and flawless.  The incongruous images are compelling.

I was delighted by the feeling that an artist took the highest level of manual skills and the sum of artist history, wove in symbols and secrets, then put it all in the blender and hit the puree button.  At the very least, the sheer amount of time each work must have taken to execute would be months to years if he is working more in the Renaissance style of “seven layer” painting in oils, whereby many months pass between letting one layer harden fully before further work on the painting is done.  This kind of Renaissance painting method was common to the 16th Century and earlier when an artist and his studio would spend years on a work and make sure the techniques used in the execution resulted in a painting that would literally last for centuries.  Patrons expected this of the work they paid for.
