Artist of the Week: Julie Koenig

December 4, 2011

The threat of death has the power to crystallize the priorities in your life.  This was the case with Ted Czerkies when he returned to painting with renewed intensity after surviving cancer.  Creativity is comforting, empowering and life affirming.  Julie Koenig focused on her work in watercolour painting after surviving a harsh battle with cancer herself.  She increased the amount of work she was doing and grew into a newer style of painting that sings with vibrant colors and soft, organic forms.

Julie Koenig has a lot of very formal watercolors, particularly floral paintings, in her portfolio.  These are nice representational works and demonstrate a traditional skill set, but the energetic and abstracted painting are of the most interest to me.  Some are loosely based on floral designs, fields of flowers or a landscape.  One that I had seen in person looked like a field of poppies, viewed from a distance without my eyeglasses; and I loved it.  The flow of the paint is true to the watercolour medium but the intensity of the colors are reminiscent of oils or acrylics.
