Where Christianity and China Collide by Shellie Lewis

January 19, 2011

Where Christianity and China Collide by Shellie Lewis, Plastic toys and acrylic paint on canvas, 8” x 8” [20.3 x 20.3 cm]

If religion is the opiate of the people, and Communism is the opposite of Capitalism, then why is it acceptable to profit financially from the mass production of religious emblems?  I guess it’s okay to sell the opium, just as long as it’s sold outside of your own borders.

These plastic toys are one of the most bizarre retail sales items that I have ever found.  They are neon colored maze puzzles with a tiny ball bearing inside of each one.  You can move the ball around the maze, but there is no specific starting or ending point.  If I shake the painting they rattle quite well.
