If you have missed out on the burgeoning Machinima field, you need to hang out with more gamer geeks.  Machinima is a form of computer animation using video games to create your own media.  There are different kinds of capture software and techniques for making Machinima.  Colleges teach classes in this now.  A lot of the cartoons are online, fan-based and funny!  More popular ones like the Halo based “Red vs. Blue” have made the jump to television and DVD.
