Photojournalist Aaron Huey & The Lakota Nation

July 4, 2010

It’s the 4th of July, and I did the usual hanging out with friends, grillin’ and stuffing our faces; but I also have concerns that this isn’t much of a holiday for some.  This photo essay and presentation by Aaron Huey is as heart wrenching as it is educational.  There was a film-maker whose name I cannot recall, and she had once indicated that there is a first-world nation hidden in every third world nation, and every first world nation has its third world nations hidden within it.  Both extremes are found within every border.

“May 28, 2010 – Challenging us with stunning images, Aaron Huey relates the fight for survival on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Aaron began photographing on Pine Ridge Reservation as part of a story on poverty in America, but it has captured his passion for five years. A quintessential example of the failures of the reservation system, he and we cannot turn away from what we see at Pine Ridge.”
