“Cute is for Girls”

Acrylic inks, acrylic paint and glitter on canvas, 24” x 30”, by Shellie Lewis

To be born female in this society, whether you like it or not, you will have “cute” shoved down your throat from the cradle to the grave.  This is a parodied, generic and formulaic cuteness, insipid in its simplicity.

This painting shows the plan I had for the “pour painting” (see earlier blog post from June 7, 2010).  The glitter is very fine and iridescent, you would have to see it in person to note all the subtle details, and it is consistent with the pastel colors and very shiny.  The glitter usage in the recent Pop Art series is phenomenological, it does not photograph well and is very responsive to the light conditions the painting is in.
