“X-Ray: The Indexical Quality of My Crushed Index”

June 5, 2010

Acrylic paint and glitter on canvas, 24” x 30” by Shellie Lewis

This is where the semiotic theory of Charles S. Peirce, Pop Art and autobiography all come together. It is made based on an x-ray I have from a prior injury.  Visualization is interesting in that we have images that enable us to see what we cannot see in the real world, with our own eyes; the x-ray mediates a visual image for us.

This painting is much better in person, the teal areas are a metallic paint and the details of the shadows in the hand and variation in the glitter on the black is much more subtle.  I’m very happy with how this one turned out.
